Description: A Bishop's Storehouse is best described as a supermarket without the cash registers. The people who shop there are in need of food and have no money coming in to buy the basic necessities of life. It is up to the Bishop in each Mormon ward (congregation) to determine if an individual qualifies for food from the Bishop's Storehouse. The Bishops’ general storehouse scrip was issued starting in 1896 for the same purpose as general tithing storehouse scrip. The Church issued scrip for produce and merchandise in denominations of 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1and $10. This scrip was payable in kind and was a convenient method of distributing produce and meat from the storehouse
